More Places and Spaces to Get Playing across Queensland

Communities from the Cape to Gold Coast and out to Blackall, Roma and Charters Towers will have more opportunites to get out and get active, thanks to an investment of more than $15 million under Round 6 of the Queensland Government’s successful Get Playing Places and Spaces program.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said a total of 129 sport and recreation infrastructure projects would be delivered across Queensland under this latest funding round.

“There was enormous interest from sport and active recreation clubs and eligible local governments across Queensland for this funding,” Mr de Brenni said.

“In total, we received more than 580 applications for funding which is an overwhelming response.

“I look forward to seeing the new, improved and replacement infrastructure projects that will come out of this round, ranging from structured sports such as netball, tennis, football, rugby league, and baseball to recreation activities such as BMX, cycling, rodeo, sailing, bushwalking and horse-riding.

“I’m especially pleased to say that 37 of the successful projects will be undertaking repairs to facilities damaged by Ex-Tropical Cycle Debbie.”

Mr de Brenni said Get Playing Places and Spaces provides funding of up to $150,000 to develop new, upgraded or replacement sport and recreation infrastructure.

“We know that getting involved in regular, organised sport offers incredible opportunities for Queenslanders to become more connected witah their communities.

“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government has committed more than $125 million to the Get in the Game suite of initiatives over the next three years to support grassroots sport and active recreation.”

Mr de Brenni said Get Playing Places and Spaces provides funding of up to $150,000 to develop new, upgraded or replacement sport and recreation infrastructure.

“This program is the Queensland Government’s successful Get in the Game initiative to support grassroots sport and recreation, now worth more than $125.5 million,” he said.

It is worth noting that in Round 6 funding, there were 129 successful projects, with total value of over $15 million. Outdoor Recreation projects represented approx 1 in 6 of those projects by number of successful applications and by value.

So, is there anything we can learn?
Quite possibly …

  • There is funding available for outdoor recreation projects
  • Sports clubs might be better at applying for funding hence the greater number of sports oriented grants
  • Outdoor recreation might get a higher percentage of the funding if more applications were submitted
