Proposal to create a 20km recreation trail from the Brisbane River to new parkland in Larapinta

Oxley Creek is one of the Brisbane River’s major tributaries.  Beginning in the forested mountain ranges of the Scenic Rim, south of Ipswich, it joins the Brisbane River approximately 70-kilometres downstream at Tennyson.  Oxley Creek has a natural drainage area of 270 square kilometres across three local government areas, making it Brisbane’s largest creek catchment, but is also one of our most urbanised and polluted waterways.

The Oxley Creek Transformation Master Plan was developed in consultation with key local stakeholder groups and, through an extensive consultation program, captures the enthusiasm and support from the community.  The Master Plan will guide future initiatives and investment to create Brisbane’s latest recreational destination and demonstrates Brisbane City Council’s dedication to a clean and green lifestyle and enthusiasm for embracing emerging trends in city sustainability.

The Master Plan proposes the creation of a 20-kilometre recreation trail from the Brisbane River to a new nature-based adventure parkland in Larapinta, creating a world-renowned birdwatching destination at Oxley Creek Common, progressively improving habitats, vegetation, waterway stability and water quality and building a regional parkland and visitor centre at Archerfield Wetlands.

Oxley Creek has the potential to become Brisbane’s newest recreational asset. The parkland legacy will include a series of connected precincts and green spaces to complement Brisbane’s outdoor lifestyle.

With a focus on new leisure and sport-based recreation activities, economic hubs, tourism, cultural heritage interpretation, environmental education and connections for people and wildlife, Oxley Creek will be a citywide destination showcasing Brisbane’s natural environment and relaxed, sub-tropical lifestyle.
