BioBlitz 2020

Kids outside becoming citizen scientists

Posted on 27.07.2020

Last year, Nature Play QLD heard a lot from Queensland educators and parents that while they supported Outdoor Classroom Day, they thought that outdoor learning should be incorporated in the everyday – and we couldn’t agree more.

This year, along with Nature Play QLD, we will still be celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day on November 5th, but starting term three we’re encouraging educators and parents to get their kids outside to become citizen scientists.  We want the kids to feel the benefits of outdoor learning while understanding the environment they live, play, and learn in. They also get the added benefit of feeling like they are part of something bigger than themselves.

Nature Play QLD has partnered with the Australian Citizen Science Association and the Atlas of Living Australia to create a Nature Play QLD BioBlitz project on iNaturalist – a free app where you can take photos of the fauna and flora in your area and log it to help scientists across the globe paint a detailed picture of our living environment.

We’re encouraging schools, educators, and parents to sign up and let their kids loose into the wild to see what they find. There are also some great lesson plans and further research ideas provided for all year levels from pre-kindy to year 6, so everyone can go a little deeper on what they have found.

This bioblitz project runs until the 31st of December 2020. This means that kids can still be involved on weekends and holidays. We will be running another bioblitz project for 2021 and announcing the theme on Outdoor Classroom Day on the 5th of November. Who knows what it could be?
