Camping changes at Teewah Beach

Camping changes at Teewah Beach

- unlikely to improve its rubbish woes

Posted on 04.02.2021

Changes to camping rules at a popular beach north of Noosa have come into effect, weeks after parks officers cleaned tonnes of rubbish from the area.

Previously, campers were required to book a permit but not a specific zone on the 15-kilometre beachfront stretch north of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast.

The changes will enable authorities to control the number of people who can access each zone.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) senior ranger Col Lawton told the ABC the changes came about due to rock falls and landslips in the camping grounds about a year ago.

“That camping zone backs onto some really steep high dune, so we had some risk management issues there to deal with,” he said.

Mr Lawton said the northern zones could now accommodate larger groups than the southern zones.

Teewah Beach on the Cooloola Coast is a remote area only accessible by four-wheel drive with few toilet facilities, but that does not deter thousands of holiday campers.

According to QPWS, the beach is “one of Queensland’s busiest camping areas attracting more than 200,000 camper nights each year”.

Locals hope the changes, which come weeks after campers left dozens of discarded tents and tonnes of rubbish in the area, will also help curb littering.

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton has called for littering fines at Teewah Beach to be enforced and hoped the new rules would go some way to improving how the area was looked after.

“It will help to narrow down those that are determined to leave their rubbish behind,” she said.

Ms Bolton said the Cooloola-Teewah Working Group had reconvened and would again raise the issue with the State Government.
