Australia's nine-year-old BMX champion becomes world number one in Colombia

At just nine years old, Portia Eden has become one of Australia’s latest BMX world champions.
Riding at the UCI BMX World Championships in Colombia, Portia won the final race by less than a wheel-width to become the world’s number one rider in her age group.
Well and truly beaten out of the starting gates, Portia was the only rider in the field to clear the first jump on the track, making up valuable ground as she flew above a pack of riders below.
“I knew that I could take the lead if I jumped that first jump,” Portia said.
For the rest of the race the seven other riders saw nothing but the back of a bright-yellow Australian jersey, save for the last few nail-biting seconds.
On the final straight Portia was challenged by the host country’s Nicole Foronda, but managed to maintain enough speed to hold her off.
“I’ve been giving it my best in the lead up to this, 100 per cent every day,” Portia said.
“This is my 4th time riding at the world championships and this time I got world number one.”
