The School is currently seeking applications for an experienced full-time, Teacher specialising in Outdoor Education to join the dedicated team at the Marrapatta Campus. Your key responsibilities as an Outdoor Education Teacher will include:
- delivering the Outdoor Education Program to students
- supporting the residential care of students, including overnight and campout locations
- supervising and guiding students (individual and group facilitation) during outdoor pursuits and activities, including canoeing, kayaking, bushwalking, orienteering, mountain biking, challenge ropes course and rock climbing/abseiling
- following the procedures for ensuring the health and wellbeing of students in the residential setting, including the promoting of positive relationships, medication and allergy management, dietary requirements and first aid
- involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme or Outward Bound
- assisting in the planning, administration, resource production and preparation of other activities.
You will also have:
- current Queensland College of Teachers registration (or eligibility to apply)
- comprehensive understanding of and expertise in the delivery of an Outdoor Education Program
- relevant instructional and/or proficiency certificates in a range of outdoor pursuits, including canoeing, kayaking, bushwalking, orienteering, mountain biking, challenge ropes course and rock climbing/abseiling
- ability to follow procedures to ensure the health and wellbeing of students, including dispensing of medication, management of allergies and dietary requirements, and promotion of positive relationships
- ability to work collaboratively and energetically within a high-performing school culture
- experience in driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle off-road
- Wilderness First Aid qualification
- Manual Drivers Licence.

About the Role
Outdoor Education at BGS contributes to the development of the Grammar Graduate through sequential outdoor learning experiences from Years 5 to 11 utilising Effective Thinking Cultures in Outdoor Education pedagogy. Each year, students reflect upon these place-based experiences building the dispositions of a Grammar learner and leader throughout the outdoor journey.
The outdoor education teacher works in a team of educators to deliver the Outdoor Education program. The Outdoor Education Teacher is responsible for the planning, preparation, implementation and management of outdoor education experiences and facilities. The program includes experiences for Years 5 to 11 students based at the School’s Outdoor Education Centre at Lake Moogerah, as well as expeditions to alternative sites, school-based training, and school community events.
The Outdoor Educator Teacher reports directly to the Director of Outdoor Education and through him to the Deputy Headmaster and Head of Senior School.
The Outdoor Educator Teacher is responsible for:
Teaching
- Implementing the School’s outdoor education program through developmentally appropriate and sequenced experiences providing an increasingly sophisticated set of physical and emotional challenges.
- Use of effective thinking cultures in pedagogy.
- Reviewing and improving the educational, safety and logistical aspects of the program annually.
- Staying connected to recent innovations and developments within the field of Outdoor Education.
- Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme through registration as an Adventurous Journey Supervisor and planning and conducting expeditions.
- Following the programs operational documents at all times.
Organisational
- Assisting with construction, improvement and maintenance of existing program infrastructure.
- Representing the School with outside groups including local property owners and government agencies in the area.
- Engage with the P&F Support Group, parent and community groups.
- Follow procedures for catering, food preparation and cooking.
Administrative
- Produce weekly reports and media for each program.
- Ensure all program equipment is safe and fully operational at all times.
- Write and update operational documents including risk assessments, standard operating procedures, logistical procedures and teaching resources.
- Collaborate with and assist the Centre’s support staff.

If you enjoy a fast-paced work environment, facilitating outdoor recreational activities with different visitors and groups and offering a high level of customer experience whilst ensuring safety – this role is for you!
Duties and responsibilities will include, however, are not limited to:
- Safely facilitate high quality sport and recreation activities and programs for individuals and groups in line with venue procedures.
- Perform logistical tasks associated with the delivery of outdoor recreation activities, including preparing and packing-down outdoor recreation activity equipment, delivery of equipment trailers to off-site locations, and maintaining equipment storage areas
- Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures, and follow risk management practices associated with the role
- Comply with workplace requirements, industry regulations and standards as well as the state-wide program framework
- Ensure that accompanying teachers / group leaders have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities while conducting activities at the Venue
- Undertake administrative and program related duties as required.
