Why

The Outdoors is a powerful medium for health and wellness. Spending time together outdoors strengthens family bonds, makes children healthier, happier and smarter and developing physical literacy empowers people to be physically active for life.

Thinking about getting outdoors?

We often think that getting outdoors requires us to climb a mountain or participate in an extreme activity. However, the holistic benefits of simply being outdoors happen with the simplest of actions.  Watching how ants structure their nests might lead to our next amazing architect, snorkelling through coral coves may lead to our next cinematic masterpiece (think Avatar). Making the time to simply be outside is important for our peace of mind and creativity, as well as our health.

So, if you aren’t into hiking, what could you do?

  • Catch a ferry and watch the lights twinkle on the water.
  • Walk in the botanical gardens all year around – watch the changing seasons and be aware that everything has a time to star!
  • Promenade European style after dinner, smile and comment on the beautiful moon!
  • Go to your local marina, walk around and dream big!
  • Chase waterfalls big and small.
  • Grab a ball and shoot some hoops (most towns have a public area, or local schools allow people to use their facilities)
  • Grab the neighbours and head to the local tennis courts for silly games and friendly banter!
  • Go fishing (you don’t really have to even worry about baiting the hook!)
  • Eat lunch in the park, and watch those insects. They may inspire your next work achievement.
  • Catch up for a walk in the park rather than meal. The dogs will love that too.
  • Garden – herbs, tomatoes and a lemon tree, even if it is just on a balcony.
  • Become a lifesaver!
  • Grab an old-fashioned surf matt and giggle all you like as you wipe out!
