With the busy holiday and Christmas season approaching, ExploreSafe, in partnership with Trail Hiking Australia, is encouraging Australians to make safety a priority this National ExploreSafe Day, held annually on December 1.
The initiative serves as a national reminder that safe exploration is a year-round responsibility. Whether it’s a short local walk or a multi-day hike, preparation and awareness remain the most powerful ways to prevent avoidable incidents and ensure every outdoor experience ends safely.
Recent events across Australia have shown how quickly conditions can change — and how vital preparation is to keeping people safe.
“Adventure should always be memorable for the right reasons,” said Darren Edwards, Founder of ExploreSafe and Trail Hiking Australia. “Too often, rescues occur because people forget to plan, underestimate the environment, or overestimate their abilities. National ExploreSafe Day is about encouraging everyone to plan ahead, pack smart, and make safety a habit — not an afterthought.”
Australia’s landscapes are world-class, but they demand respect. National ExploreSafe Day encourages individuals and outdoor organisations to use the day as a reminder to:
- Choose a walking track that matches your experience and abilities
- Take time to plan and prepare properly before you go
- Always have a backup plan in case conditions change
- Check official sources for up-to-date weather forecasts, alerts, and trail conditions before heading out
- Pack the right gear and make sure you know how to use it
- Let someone know your trip details and expected return time
- Respect nature and follow Leave No Trace principles
Everyone can get involved by sharing their own safety tips and adventure stories on social media using #ExploreSafeDay. Free resources, including printable safety checklists, emergency guides, and social media assets, are available at www.exploresafe.au.
“Preparedness doesn’t take the fun out of adventure — it helps ensure you come home to tell the story,” added Edwards. “We want every Australian to stay safe, explore more, and always #ExploreSafe.”
