a year that set the future for Queensland sport and recreation

Sport and active recreation is vital to the future health and wellbeing of Queenslanders and our communities. As 2019 draws to a close, we have been reflecting on some of the achievements made through the Activate! Queensland strategy to improve physical activity opportunities for everyone.

Following our statewide community consultation in 2018 where thousands of Queenslanders had their say on how to improve sport and active recreation participation, Activate! Queensland 2019-2029 officially launched in July this year. The $1.3 billion 10-year strategy supports all Queenslanders to be more physically active, more often—from the grassroots to the elite level.

Activating Queenslanders
The strategy kicked off with several new funding programs. Following the launch of round one of Active Clubs, more than 1,000 Queensland sporting clubs and organisations are set to receive funding for equipment and training in the 2019-20 financial year.

So far, almost 13,800 FairPlay vouchers have been issued, supporting children from low-income families to participate in sport and active recreation. Round two of the program opens in January 2020.

Activating collaboration
In the past few months, new partnership programs
have commenced with several sporting organisations including Netball Queensland, Queensland Cricket, Tennis Queensland and AFL Queensland, to deliver a range of physical activity initiatives. More partnership opportunities
will be coming soon.

Activating environments
October saw the launch of our $40 million three-year Active Community Infrastructure initiative, calling for ideas from the community for infrastructure projects that activate places and spaces, and inspire physical activity.

We also began the transformation of our recreation centres. The $4.7 million stage 2 accommodation refurbishment on the Gold Coast has commenced, and construction of a $5.7 million accommodation redevelopment on the Sunshine Coast will start in early 2020.

Read how improved infrastructure has benefited the Cooktown Crocs Rugby League Club  and Thursday Island Bowls Club.

Activating success
And finally, the Emerging Athlete Pathways travel subsidy has been assisting Queensland’s talented young athletes on their pathway to elite success.

$1 million in funding is being provided during the 2019-20 financial year to help alleviate the costs associated with participating in sporting competitions.

It has been a very big year for our sport and active recreation community in Queensland, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and invested interest in the Activate! Queensland strategy. We wish you a healthy and happy holiday season, and look forward to an exciting 2020!
