Anywhere, Anytime campaign

With so many outdoor providers using our roads and motorways to access outdoor spaces and activity venues, it is important to be aware of any road rule changes and associated penalties.

From 1 July, penalties for speeding, failing to wear a correctly fitted seatbelt, and running a red light will attract increased penalties. This could impact you and /or our colleagues while driving work vehicles and in their personal lives.

Tragically, Queenslanders are still being seriously injured or losing their lives in road crashes that are preventable. A new road safety campaign called ‘Anywhere. Anytime.’ will run from now until August to inform the Queenslanders tougher penalties and that they can be caught anywhere, anytime.

Fines and demerit points serve as an effective deterrent in changing behaviour, especially when accompanied by regulation, enforcement, engineering, and public education. So that’s why tougher penalties will apply.

The campaign can be viewed on the StreetSmarts website. The campaign comprises outdoor advertising (billboards, gyms, petrol screens), online video, social media, and radio ads.

New penalties will be:

Speeding offences*:

• 1-10km/hr $287 + 1 demerit point
• 11-20km/hr $431 +3 demerit points
• 21-30km/hr $646 + 4 demerit points
• 31-40km/hr $1078 + 6 demerit points
• 40km/hr and over $1653 + 8 demerit points and automatic 6-month licence suspension

* The speeding penalty bracket of 1-12 km/hr and 13-20 km/hr will change to 1-10 km/hr and 11-20 km/hr to reflect risk and align Queensland with many other Australian jurisdictions.

Seatbelt penalties will increase to $1078 and 4 demerit points (the driver will also receive these penalties for each passenger who is not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing one properly).

Running a red-light will incur a $575 and 3 demerit points.

Double demerit points apply for seatbelt offences and offences for speeding more than 20km/hr over the speed limit committed 2 or more times in 12 months. Anybody persisting in these dangerous behaviours runs the very real risk of having their licence suspended.
