Million-dollar views for revamped Burleigh walking track
The Gold Coast’s iconic Oceanview Walk at Burleigh Heads has undergone a million-dollar revamp by the Palaszczuk Government in time for the Commonwealth Games.
The walking track, which is in Burleigh Head National Park, is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
National Parks Minister Steven Miles said the re-opening of the revitalised 1.2 kilometre track today was great news for locals and visitors.
“This beautiful headland offers one of the best land-based whale-watching vantage points on the Gold Coast,” Mr Miles said.
“For anyone who has never seen a whale, it’s a great place to visit now that the humpback whale migration season is well underway.
“Some visitors have also been lucky enough to see sea-eagles soaring along the coast when walking on the trail.
“So, it’s no surprise it’s an incredibly popular spot, attracting more than 500,000 visitors every year.
“We’re also expecting to see a dramatic rise in those visitor numbers, as the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games draws closer.”
As part of the upgrades, QPWS has widened the new track in some places and improved the surface with fibre-reinforced concrete.
“People using wheelchairs will also benefit from improved accessibility, and new seating and fencing has been installed,” Mr Miles said.
“The northern entry point has been widened from 1.5 to 1.8 metres with a smoother surface, meaning it will be safer and easier to pass other people – which is great news for surfers who use the trail to get to and from their favourite breaks.
“The colour has also been specifically chosen to blend into the natural surroundings.
“Whilst the upgrade work will significantly improve track stability, heavy rain and bad weather can sometimes cause boulders above the track to become loose.
“For this reason, visitors should continue to heed the safety signage and barriers once the Oceanview track reopens.”
