Updated information on closures and restrictions

Closures and restrictions put in place by the Queensland Government on its national parks, conservation parks, resource reserves, state forests and recreation areas to help contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

As of 9 April 2020, the following places are closed until further notice:

  • all camping areas and camp sites in Queensland’s national parks, forests and recreation areas
  • all barbecue facilities in all day-use and camping areas in Queensland’s national parks, forests and recreation areas
  • specified high visitation sites (list linked below)
  • all Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Visitor Centres and Wildlife Centres (listed below).

Due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation, QPWS staff will monitor visitation rates for compliance with Health Directives and any identified high COVID-19 risks with the possibility of further changes to park closures as the situation continues to evolve. Please check this page and park alerts regularly for updates.

Currently Closed Sites

All park users are urged to follow the latest advice provided by the Australian and Queensland Government. It’s essential that people remain inside their local area, keep gatherings to the required number of people, and comply with social distancing conditions.

Do not attempt to visit any closed areas, unless authorised, for your own safety and protection, and that of your community.

These areas will be monitored and penalties may apply to those who do not comply with the closures.

Camping permit bookings

  • All camping areas within Queensland national parks, state forests and recreation areas  were closed on 26 March 2020.
  • Camping bookings with a start date up to, and including, 31 May 2020 are being cancelled.
  • People have been contacted directly about how to obtain a refund and you can also cancel your booking or request a refund via the Queensland National Parks Booking Service. Those who have purchased a weekly 4WD permit linked to a camping permit will be eligible for a full refund.
  • Bookings that commence after 31 May 2020 will remain valid at this time pending future advice. No new camping bookings are being accepted at this time.

Remaining open

  • Most walking tracks and recreational trails remain ‘open for exercise’ – check this page and park alerts for where you intend to visit before you go.
  • Avoid high use area touch points such as lookout handrails, seating and picnic tables
