MTB riders tackle muddy Tasmanian tracks

Rain and mud have made for some spectacular sights at the Enduro World Series (EWS) mountain bike event in Tasmania’s picturesque north-east.

Thousands of people and international media flocked to the normally sleep town of Derby to watch some serious mountain biking by 300 riders from 26 countries.

The first round was held in New Zealand last month and the competitors next month head to Portugal for round three.

But it was the first time Australia had hosted a round, enabling Tasmania to showcase its growing reputation for quality bike trails.

Frenchman Adrien Dailly won the senior event, which covered seven stages winding through nearly 50 kilometres of hinterland.

New South Wales rider Chris Panozzo said the course lived up to the state’s reputation.

“Tasmania’s known for it being a bit of a wild place, so the stages are definitely a bit wild in some spots and a bit tame in others,” he said.
