To get more older Australians more active, more often, by walking.
Walking is one of the best and safest ways for older Australians to protect their heart and their health. Crucial to our goal is shaping our built environment so it supports more older Australians to walk and we’re on the hunt for innovative case studies in this area of planning and development.
Walkable places play a key role in creating sustainable age-friendly communities. As our ageing population grows, the Heart Foundation wants to make sure we are planning and creating buildings and communities that support older Australians to stay active, healthy and socially connected in their local area.
We are calling out for case studies which highlight best-practice planning, built environment and urban landscape projects that promote active ageing through enhanced walkability for persons aged 65 and over.
“We’d love to hear from a retirement or aged care facility which is designed to promote walking, or a Council with an innovative walking access plan for their local community”, says Trevor Shilton, Director Active Living at the Heart Foundation. “We want to showcase your work so we can inspire others to build a healthier future for all Australians.”
If you’ve worked on a project that makes it easier for older Australians be active through walking, we would love to hear from you.
Selected submissions will be featured on the Heart Foundation’s Healthy Active by Design website, resources, training materials, media releases and social media posts for a national audience of planners, designers, developers and providers to older Australians.
