Social Isolation

World First by Dept of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety

Developed in partnership with TAFE Queensland, it is now available free-of-charge to frontline professionals and volunteers within Queensland communities.

The course is an initiative of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety and has been developed in close consultation with industry stakeholders, subject matter experts and people with lived experience.

The course aims to equip participants with practical skills to identify and respond to social isolation and loneliness in a community setting – with particular emphasis on supporting:

  • First Nations peoples
  • culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
  • people with disability
  • LGBTQIA+ people, and
  • people experiencing social isolation and loneliness in rural and remote areas.

The self-directed online format is available now, or, you can register your interest in future face to face and online-facilitated sessions.

Understanding social isolation and loneliness
Prevalence, impact and protective factors
Techniques for identifying social isolation and loneliness
Approaches to support connection
Reflective practice and self-care

Who is the course for?

Eligible volunteers and frontline professionals working in Queensland communities can enrol in the course for free:

  • health and disability workers
  • social workers, community organisation and neighbourhood centre workers
  • community volunteers

Cost:                  FREE for eligible Queensland-based participants

Duration:          Approximately 4-5 hours (online self-directed)
