Anglers searching for a metre-long trophy fish are flocking to Rockhampton
Published: 16 March 2026
Australia’s beef capital has another title in its sights: destination barramundi.
Charter operators say anglers searching for a metre-long trophy fish are flocking to Rockhampton, where they can fish on the mighty Fitzroy River not long after landing at the airport.
And more than a decade since commercial netting was banned in the central Queensland river, the species’ size and population have exploded, with the local tourism industry promoting “monster” barra catches on social media.
“You can fly in, check in, and be on the river within 2 hours … it’s really accessible,”
Advance Rockhampton tourism coordinator Lauren Law said.
