A pilot program giving riders right of way is set to be introduced in a Sunshine Coast beach town next year.
The Peregian Active Street Pilot, a $1.6 million initiative led by Noosa Shire Council, will be rolled out along an 800m stretch of Lorikeet Drive at Peregian Beach, from Emu Mountain Road to Jabiru Street.
The program will feature rider-priority zones, moving motorists into ‘over-run’ areas on the edge of the road to accommodate riders.
It will also introduce a 30km/h speed limit, traffic-calming devices, designated car parks and safer footpaths for pedestrians along the affected stretch.
Lorikeet Drive was chosen because it is a key missing link between the Noosa and Sunshine Coast coastal pathways and offers riders and pedestrians a quieter alternative to busy nearby roads.
The road connects Peregian Beach to nearby parks, beaches, homes and schools.
The project has been developed in response to community feedback from the 2020–2040 Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy (adopted in 2021) and the 2022 Noosa Liveability Study.
The concept design phase is currently underway, with final designs expected by August 2025.
Community consultation is ongoing, with further discussions planned during the detailed design stage.

The program is funded jointly by the state and federal governments, through the 2024–27 South East Queensland Liveability Fund and the Active Transport Fund, respectively.
