Coffee & Conversation

A chance to talk – to get together with others from the outdoors

A chance to talk – to get together with others from the outdoors.

We’ll share with you what we know and what we are doing – and you can share your concerns, suggestions and solutions.

Some of the topics that could be discussed include:

  • Future events and activities
  • Funding opportunities
  • Getting outdoors – dealing with climate change
  • Outdoors Queensland – what it means for you
  • COVID Safe Plans and the Roadmap to easing restrictions

Have a topic to add to the Agenda?
Email the details to operations@outdoorsqueensland.com.au

Please Note
These sessions are not simply Outdoors Queensland sharing info with the sector – they are an opportunity for you to speak up, have your say, make some suggestions, share your ideas … a conversation!

We are hosting these conversations every second Friday morning at 11:00 am until further notice.

Please REGISTER to join the conversations so that we have your email address and can more easily keep in touch, send you links and share information. You only need to register ONCE to join all conversations.

Vaccination
Outdoors Queensland supports vaccination against Covid-19 and encourages everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccination is the best way to ensure the health and safety of all outdoor activity operators, participants and members of the public in Queensland.

Sport & Recreation (Luke Carman)
From Public health and social measures from 17 December 2021

Can the owner of an essential business decide not to permit entry to unvaccinated patrons or staff?

  • Essential businesses can self-impose rules for patrons and can decide to refuse entry to unvaccinated patrons.
  • In relation to staff, business owners are encouraged to seek their own legal advice.
  • The Fair Work Ombudsman has released detailed advice for employers about mandating vaccination of workers. This information can be found at Coronavirus and Australian workplace laws

Businesses, venues and organisations can self-impose entry requirements however this is a business decision. Whether your organisation makes this choice, or you are required to do so under the Public Health and Social Measures Direction, the onus is on the person entering to show proof of their vaccination status. You are not expected to act as the police and if a person is refusing to comply, you can call the police for assistance. (Sport & Recreation mailer, December 16)

Questions for David Miller, Department of Education
Please note the following questions we have put to David Miller on your behalf.
We will forward the answers when received.

  • Can you provide “official” confirmation that non-government outdoor education providers are included under this direction as the original notification clearly called out only Government owned facilities?
  • Is a camp that provides only food, accommodation, and dining (i.e. no instructor led activities) still an “Outdoor Education” facility?
  • Do students aged 16+ need to be vaccinated to go on school camp or is it seen as the same as school where all can attend?
  • What is the situation for workers who deliver expedition/journey based outdoor education? Would that be considered an education setting?
  • Can you confirm requirements for Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey Supervisors (who operate under Qld Dept of Education)? Are the Duke of Education volunteers considered to be workers in high-risk settings, when they are supervising students on journeys in national parks etc away from schools, not in the buildings at a school?

Note from Steven Gay, AQIA
Apologies for any audio issues during my chat on Coffee & Conversations this morning. I understand there may have been some feedback while I was talking.

Active Queenslanders Industry Alliance is going on the road this year to spread the word about our free services and to introduce a number of other interesting services to the fitness, sport and recreation industry.  We are a not-for-profit service provider on behalf of the peak bodies: Fitness Australia, QSport and Outdoors Queensland.  Our website is www.aqia.org.au.

We would love to see all of you at some of our upcoming Active Queenslanders Forums and for you to spread the word to your networks. The more people that hear about the sessions the better.  Registrations can be done at: https://www.aqia.org.au/events/ as each event opens.

Meanwhile, a copy of today’s presentation (PDF of slides) is also attached with all the details of dates, locations and speakers.

Hello everyone,
Lauren from UPLOADS here.

Last time I was online with you all Scott and I were promoting the “Evaluating Incident Prevention Methods in Led Outdoor Activities” Research project.  The purpose of this study is to evaluate six different safety interventions for a series of injuries sustained during a hiking activity.  The hiking safety interventions were developed from three different safety intervention methods. The evaluation will allow an understanding of which method is best equipped to develop safety interventions in LOA.    To participate, you will be asked to complete a postal survey to evaluate incident prevention.  So…

If you are involved with safety management, program design, and/or involved in the development of safety interventions, we would love you to be involved.  It will take about an hour of your time, and it can be done in the comfort of your own home.

If you would like to be involved, please contact me on lcovento@usc.edu.au
