Have your say on a 25-year strategy

Public consultation is now open on the draft plan, which outlines a 25-year strategy for the forestry and timber industry. Five-yearly action plans will also be developed to deliver on the strategy.

The Queensland Government is seeking feedback on the draft Queensland Future Timber Plan (QFTP) and input on actions needed to secure the long-term future of Queensland’s forestry and timber industry and timber supply.

The QFTP forms part of the 25-year blueprint, Primary Industries Prosper 2050, co-designed by the Queensland Government and industry to provide a pathway to boost primary production output to $30 billion by 2030.

The QFTP will be co-designed, co-invested and co-delivered with the industry to deliver a thriving and sustainable forestry and timber industry that can meet the growing timber demand required for housing, construction and infrastructure.

Queensland needs a reliable and sustainable supply of timber to meet its target to build one million new homes by 2044.

The QFTP will outline a strategy to build a reliable and secure timber supply for Queensland. This is a landmark opportunity to shape a timber industry that is sustainable, competitive and proudly Queensland.

The QFTP will focus on 5 key areas:

  1. securing sustainable timber supply for housing, construction and infrastructure and other industries
  2. establishing supply chain competitiveness on an international scale
  3. developing better regulation that the community sees benefits in
  4. building and retaining a viable fit-for-purpose workforce in rural and regional economies
  5. modernising and innovating the Queensland forestry and timber industry through research, development and extension.

Queensland’s state forests are a vital resource, serving as a source of timber and supporting recreation, eco-tourism, research and conservation. The QFTP focuses on exploring ways to enhance the productivity and sustainability of these much-loved assets.
