Promoting good trail etiquette
Published: 9 June 2026
The Australian Trail Horse Riders Association (ATHRA) is sharing an important national initiative designed to strengthen safety, courtesy, and positive interactions between all users of Australia’s shared trails.
Go Slow & Say Hello is a simple, friendly, evidence‑based program that promotes safe passing behaviour and mutual awareness between walkers, runners, cyclists, mountain bikers, orienteers, motorised users and horse riders. As trail networks become busier and more diverse, programs like this play a vital role in reducing risk, preventing incidents, and fostering a culture of respect across all disciplines.
The aim is not to change how people enjoy the outdoors, but to support ongoing education and shared understanding so that every trail user — regardless of speed, mode, or experience — can feel safe and welcome.
There are resources on the ATHRA website for:
Pedestrians: Stay alert. Be on the look-out and hear-out for faster trail users.
Bike Riders: Whether you are under human power, electric or petrol, respect those slower than you.
Horse Riders: Horses can be intimidating to others, if you stay calm, it helps your horse remain calm.
and a downloadable brochure to share with others.
