Queensland conservationists bracing for big impact

ABC News story highlighting the potential and damaging effect on Queensland bird species with the arrival of the H5N1 bird flu strain.
A lot of the special Queensland birds that don’t occur anywhere else in the world are bush birds and things like parrots and fairy-wrens, robins, Birdlife Australia President Hugh Possingham said.
Anyone who sees a dead or sick bird is asked not to touch it. They should report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.\

What is Avian Influenza?
H5 bird flu (H5N1, a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza) is an infectious disease that can affect wild, farmed and pet birds. The virus has now been detected in Australia. H5 bird flu is a nationally notifiable disease meaning if you suspect an animal is showing signs of the disease, you must report it immediately.
