Preliminary figures from the 2026 Super Tuesday count show a 19% increase in the number of e-bikes on roads nationally, compared with 2025.
E-bikes made up 17% of all trips made by bike across the country.
Other early national findings from this year’s count show that the proportion of women riders increased by 2% from 2025, with the number of women riding e-bikes increasing by 20%.
The proportion of women riding e-bikes versus push bikes rose from 19% to 22%.
Notably, women riders are likelier to ride in situations where there is separated bike infrastructure. A study of two similar routes in central Melbourne showed that a route with separated bike lanes experienced on average an 8% higher proportion of women riders.
Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack said it was heartening to see the numbers of e-bikes rising.
“Legal e-bikes are a safe, convenient and accessible means of commuting for thousands of Australians.
“They offer all the enjoyment and mobility of a standard push bike but expand the bounds of what people can use their bike to do — such as carry heavier loads or travel longer distances without breaking a sweat.
“Particularly in the wake of the recent fuel crisis, which is pushing Australians to choose sustainable travel options over motor vehicles, e-bikes are a great option.
“We’re excited that this year’s data shows more e-bikes on our roads, suggesting bike riding is opening up to a whole new audience.”
The Super Tuesday bike count takes place annually in March.
This year’s event, on the morning of Tuesday 3 March, saw over 1,000 volunteers count bikes from 7am to 9am at over 940 sites across Australia.
The data gathered will be provided to 55 councils and other government agencies to inform transport infrastructure decisions.
Full Super Tuesday survey results will be available to the public on the Bicycle Network Data Dashboard by the end of the year.
Counts data has been collected by Bicycle Network for over a decade. It is available to view up to 2025 on the online dashboard here.
The next major count to gather bike data is Super Sunday, which takes place on 8 November 2026. Interested in volunteering to count bikes? Watch this space for registrations opening in October.
