Queensland Future Timber Plan

Positive News for SEQ Forests

October 23, 2025

The Queensland Government released the Queensland Future Timber Plan 2050 on Monday, 20 October.  The announcement came from The Honourable Tony Perrett, Minister for Primary Industries.  You can read the full statement here: Queensland Government Media Statement.

Outdoors Queensland took part in the consultation process by making a formal submission.  We welcome the plan’s clear commitment that native timber harvesting will not return to state-owned native forests in the South East Queensland Regional Plan area.

As a result, forests across South East Queensland can now begin transitioning into the protected area estate. Depending on their environmental values, these areas may become national parks or conservation parks. Importantly, this transition will include public consultation so communities can help shape the future of these forests.

In addition, Outdoors Queensland will continue to advocate for better public access. We want more people to experience these forests for recreation, tourism, education, and health.

However, native timber harvesting will continue in other parts of Queensland.
Even so, this is a strong and positive outcome for South East Queensland’s native forests.
Therefore, we commend the Queensland Government for providing clarity and long-term certainty for the sector.

Finally, we thank everyone who contributed to the consultation process.
Special appreciation goes to the Protect Beautiful Queensland alliance and its Forests For Everyone campaign for their passionate advocacy.
