The upcoming 2023 First Nations Conferences will explore the great strides in Indigenous communities of closing the gap in Indigenous health and wellbeing through innovative partnerships with NGOs, government departments and community-controlled organisations. When it comes to our First Nations’ health, the fact remain that Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander health is not equal in comparison to the whole of Australian community. First Nations Australian’s health has always been based on the premise of a holistic approach and does not only mean the physical wellbeing of an individual, but also the social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing of the whole community. For First Nations peoples, this is seen with the whole-life-view. First Nations peak organisations strive to achieve the state wherein every individual must bring about the total wellbeing of our communities. This holistic understanding of health and wellbeing involves the whole community which includes much broader issues like social justice, equity, rights, and treaty as well as traditional knowledge, traditional healing, and connection to country.

ICS success is based upon our principle of trusting our culture, listening and adhering to our grassroots, community-controlled grounding and as part of this, our future planning is open to input from communities, grassroots individuals and organisations. At least 50% of the conference agenda items are allocated for papers submitted from grassroots community-controlled organisations. These conferences should be seen as avenues for information sharing and further professional development no matter which level you are in your career.

Similarly, moves are afoot to establish a national First Nations tourism and business association for national Indigenous tourism in Australia; hence, the 2023 First Nations International Tourism Conference, 2023 First Nations National Employment & Training Conference and 2023 First Nations National Business Enterprise Conference are being organize by two Indigenous tourism operators in Cairns with the theme of the conference being, “Working Together to establish a national association”. Indigenous Conference Service founder and CEO, Thomas Callaghan, a Biripi and Dainggatti Elder and Trevor Tim of Dreamtime Cruises Cairns will be hosting the conferences to provide a platform for further developing our own national voice representing Indigenous Tourism operators and businesses. For after all, there is strength in unity, backed with 60,000 years+ culture. Topics at these conferences will range from establishing new joint ventures, the role governments have to play and the role our community have to play with Elders leading the way.
