Vandals have deliberately poisoned six large trees, more than 100 years old, at Queens Park in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

A $4,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that leads to a conviction.

The Ipswich City Council said it was the second time large trees had been poisoned in the park, with two removed a year ago.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the trees would need to be cut down for safety.

“We just can’t allow these vandals to get away with poisoning our heritage — these trees are pretty significant to Queens Park,” he said.

“We’ve put a lot of energy, effort and dollars into Queens Park to make it the best it can be, and for someone to just come along and poison our heritage is disgraceful.

“We just noticed the trees start to deteriorate — you can just see the impact of the poison, the herbicide — and we just don’t understand why anybody would use such an act of disgraceful violence.”
